The Nvidia GTX 970M is a 900 series’ top tier gaming GPU, based on the Nvidia Maxwell (II) architecture, the GM204 core and utilizing a GDDR5 RAM. At its time, the GTX 970M could be found in laptops typically priced at around $1200-$1600. It was replaced by the Pascal GTX 1060 and GTX 1070.
Gaming performance is adequate for very high to max graphics settings @ 1080p in games of its time (2016). Compared to the current Pascal offerings (2018), performance in heavy 3D games almost equals the GTX 1050 Ti GPU (laptop version) that can be found in laptops for as low as $580-$600. The GTX 1050 Ti, besides rendering the 970M irrelevant, also require considerably less power to operate, by at least 10-15W.
