Lenovo Y50 I5-4200H

The new Lenovo Y50 15.6″ gaming laptop is Lenovo’s new top gaming laptop. It comes with good specs for around $1000. In terms of gaming performance, it’s about the fastest you’ll get for $1000 for now.

Some models also sport a higher quality Intel 7260 WiFi card like the I5 model, which is much better than the lower end options available from Lenovo site. Speakers are very good for a laptop an easily surpass the competitors, like in the Lenovo Y510p model.

Keyboard is only so-so with low keys feedback and it’s one disadvantage of the Y50. Battery is around 4 hours tops browsing the web. Future bios or other updates might fix it.

The 1080p displays are not very good (though vary in quality) and certainly not IPSs. However, it’s easy to replace the display.

Finally, the ~$1000 gives a good package, very good gaming performance, good speakers, lower weight (only around 2.4kg is relatively low for such a laptop) and good looks. Price is good and you can’t really go wrong with it, if you are willing to replace the display. However, other options might suit your needs better and better ask before you purchase.

Would you recommend the Lenovo Y50 whole-heartily now at this price point? I’m also planning to do the screen change as well.

whole-heartily – no. With good keyboard and screen changed, I would definitely consider it one of the best options.
If you can wait more, then wait. Remember that the I7 version can be bought for $950 (maybe with tax, not sure, and with a 3160 vs 7260)

But the question is – what are your needS?

Well, I do want to play most games on High/Ultra, so that either requires a 850m GDDR5 or 860m GDDR5 minimum. Besides the screen, which I’m going to replace anyways, I don’t think the keyboard would be a deal-breaker for me. For cost, I need a computer below $1,000 total with an OS, unless the OS can be obtained for really cheap. With those considerations in mind, I’ve narrowed it down to the Y50 or the Acer Aspire V3-772G. Although, I am leaning towards the Y50 just because of the speakers and build design overall. Such a dilemma…

if you are a student, for example, you can get it Windows for a low price (and Linux for free, but it’s not that good for gaming yet).
The Y50 and V3 are good options, true. The GE60 Apache Pro too, but it’s too pricey :
I would consider GTX 850M DDR3 laptops too – they will run most games on very high settings

No preference for 15.6″ vs 17.3″? How about a 13.3″ laptop?

Not in college yet, so I can’t take advantage of the Dreamspark promo. And honestly, I have no preference really for screen size, this laptop won’t be moving much anyways.

how about battery? If you need good battery performance, again consider waiting for the Acer V7
What do you think?

Is it a large difference? It might not matter anyways, as I’m gonna mostly keep it plugged into a wall socket. But hey, it’d be a plus! And is the V7 even on sale yet? I’ve checked Amazon, and the price seems to be $50 dollars higher then the original $799…

No, it’s not available yet.
The 13.3″ Clevo W230SS is also a good option but does not have good speakers. You do get good 1080p IPS display and GTX 860M

The Y50 is a good option if you are ok with the keyboard and you’ll change the screen, indeed

Sorry for making you repeat what you’ve already wrote about in other posts to other people! I’ve read all of your forum topics and I just appreciate the effort and time you put in to answer not only mine, but everyone else’s questions as well! I’m just paranoid when it comes to expensive purchases that I’m gonna have to keep using for a long time. But yeah, solely because of the price right now on Amazon and the fact that I will be replacing the screen, I’m leaning towards the Y50. It’s also 15.6 in and kinda (?) light, so… Read more »
