Alienware 15 R2 screen left$1050-$1100 is an excellent price

The new Alienware 15 R2 is a pretty nice laptop for less than $1100, with a GTX 970M and an I7, even refurbished. For $1100, it is one of the most cost effective gaming laptops with a GTX 970M, surpassed only rarely by some laptop deal from previous generation laptops.

Thermals are good (not great, but good), gaming performance is very good, IPS display is ok, but not great (replaceable), and the optional Alienware Amplifier and the Thunderbolt 3 connection port which maybe useful for future eGPUs. Keyboard is good, battery running times are long thanks to a big battery, speakers are nice (though not great).

Weight and size may be a problem for some, so give it a thought before you get it, but otherwise, for gamers looking for a laptop at around $1000-$1100, this is a very good option.

If this laptop interests you, it’s probably better to check with a Dell rep to see if you could get a better deal. Also, make sure you are not getting the GTX 965M by mistake (unless it is for $800 or so)

Yes definitely one of the best deals out there still. I really wish Alienware offered a version with a good i7-6700 and a low end gpu like a 950m or even 940m. This would allow keeping the price lower and maximize use of the external gpu adapter. It does look like several new external gpu solutions are finally coming out soon though that are not proprietary! Will you be doing a writeup about the “Razer Core” and “Asus GX2” boxes? It looks like this might finally be the perfect solution for users who only need to do serious gaming at… Read more »

The Razer thing is already available? Frankly, if it works then there isn’t too much to review about it (maybe barring some small features at this point). However, I would try to keep an eye on the *availability* and how well do these boxes function with various systems. I mean, the bigger question is whether you’ll be able to use it with other laptops with TB3 or, alternatively, if some bios mod is necessary – then I’ll try to catch these Maybe someone like you should wait and see what’s going on in this field before purchasing BTW, another option… Read more »
